The kennels are on Oakhurst Farms, located midway between Burton and Brenham, Texas; only about a 1 hour drive from Houston, Texas, sufficiently far enough to get the benefit of being in the country. The Farms are situated on 125 acres with it’s own adjoining cross country course with plenty of land for daily exercising of horses and hounds. This is where the hounds are cared for, exercised and trained. Our pack was initially 8 ½ couple (17), mostly cross bred hounds, but has grown over the first season with 6 young entries from Bull Run Hunt and the commencement of breeding our own pack. Since our start we have drafted more hounds from Mells Foxhounds and started our breeding program.
On a normal day there are 8 1/2 -10 ½ couple of hounds hunting. The hounds are trained to hunt as a pack usually staying together to track their prey. They hunt solely on scent, not sight, so the cooler mornings take the pack further afield and faster than on the warmer days as the cooler weather enables the scent to linger longer. The weather plays an important part, as scenting is effected by humidity and temperature and what happens on any day is really dictated by nature. No two days hunting are ever the same.
