Our Hunt

A Short History

Independence Foxhounds was established in the spring of 2004. The initial pack was formed from three hunts in Tennessee; Mells Foxhounds, Hillsboro’ Hounds and Beech Grove Hunt. The pack was initially 8 ½ couple (17), mostly cross bred hounds, but has grown over the first season with 6 young entries from Bull Run Hunt and the commencement of breeding our own pack. Since our start we have drafted more hounds from Mells Foxhounds and started our own breeding program.

The kennels are located mid way between Burton and Brenham (map), Texas. The hunt was named after Independence, Texas, which is a short drive from the kennels. This is where the hounds are cared for, exercised and trained.

Fox Hunting

Fox hunting is a very different equine sport and the hunters can cover the many miles in one mornings sport. Along the wire fences wooden panels are installed, this enables the field (those horse riders who come to follow the sport), to take the most direct line when in pursuit of the pack of hounds. Modern technology is however bowed to in these urbanized times, each hound wears an orange tracking collar, so that at the end of the day should anyone not come back to the days start point, they can be located and brought home. Radios are also used to communicate direction and any possible mishaps.

The hunt usually has two fields each time it goes out. The first field is a faster pace and riders will be required to jump. The second field is typically a non jumping field.
Fox hunting is popular in the US, but it gets its roots from the UK, where a government ban came into place on February 19th 2005.
Independence Foxhounds is located an easy distance from Houston and Austin. People interested in participating should contact the huntsman Candida Scott or call 713 301 8171.
